What Is a GEO Audit — and Why Your Business Needs One

AI search engines are answering questions about your business right now. A GEO audit shows you exactly what they're saying — and how to fix it.

The Question Nobody’s Asking Yet

Right now, someone is asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini about your industry. Maybe about your specific business. And an AI is confidently generating an answer.

Do you know what that answer says?

Most businesses don’t. They’re still obsessing over Google rankings while AI search engines are quietly becoming the first place people go for recommendations, comparisons, and buying decisions. The AI doesn’t check your SEO. It doesn’t read your Google Ads. It forms an opinion based on your web presence, structured data, reviews, authority signals, and whatever it absorbed during training.

A GEO audit finds out what that opinion is — and whether it’s helping you or sending customers to your competitor.

What GEO Actually Is

Generative Engine Optimization. It’s like SEO, but for AI models instead of search engine crawlers.

SEO optimizes for Google’s ranking algorithm — keywords, backlinks, page speed, structured snippets. GEO optimizes for how AI models understand, represent, and recommend your business when someone asks a question.

The difference matters because AI models don’t just rank links. They synthesize answers. When someone asks Perplexity “what’s the best coffee roaster in Austin,” it doesn’t show ten blue links. It generates a paragraph with specific recommendations. Your business is either in that paragraph or it isn’t.

What influences whether you show up:

  • Training data — what the model learned about you from the internet at large
  • Structured data — schema markup, consistent business information, machine-readable content
  • Authority signals — mentions, citations, reviews across platforms
  • Content clarity — whether your website explains what you do in ways AI can parse and summarize
  • Freshness — models with web access pull current data. Stale sites get stale recommendations

What a GEO Audit Reveals

A GEO audit systematically queries AI models about your business and industry, then analyzes the results. Here’s what you learn:

  • What AI says about you — the actual generated text when someone asks about your business, products, or services. Sometimes it’s accurate. Sometimes it’s wildly wrong. Sometimes you don’t appear at all
  • Where you’re visible vs invisible — which AI platforms mention you, which ones don’t, and why the gap exists
  • Who AI recommends instead — your competitors might be getting recommended because they have better structured data, more reviews, or clearer content. The audit shows who and why
  • Structured data gaps — missing schema markup, inconsistent NAP (name, address, phone) data, or content that AI can’t parse properly
  • Content blind spots — pages that look good to humans but are opaque to AI. Marketing copy that says nothing concrete. Missing FAQ sections that AI loves to pull from
  • Competitive positioning — how AI ranks you against competitors in your space and what signals are driving that ranking

Why This Matters Right Now

AI search isn’t coming. It’s here. Perplexity has millions of daily users. ChatGPT’s search feature is live. Google’s AI Overviews appear on a growing percentage of searches. Gemini is integrated into Android.

The businesses that figure out GEO early get a compounding advantage. Here’s why:

  • First-mover advantage is real — AI models form “opinions” that persist. If you establish authority now, you become the default recommendation. Displacement is harder than establishment
  • Traditional SEO is getting eaten — zero-click answers from AI mean fewer people clicking through to websites. If the AI gives the answer, your organic traffic doesn’t matter
  • Your competitors aren’t doing this yet — GEO is early enough that most businesses haven’t heard of it. That’s your window
  • The fix is often simple — many GEO improvements are things you should be doing anyway: better structured data, clearer content, consistent information across platforms

What You Can Actually Fix

The good news: most GEO problems are fixable without rebuilding your entire web presence.

  • Add schema markup — LocalBusiness, Product, FAQ, Review schema. This is the single highest-leverage fix. AI models love structured data because it’s unambiguous
  • Write for clarity, not cleverness — AI can’t parse your cute marketing metaphors. “We help businesses grow” means nothing. “We build custom CRM integrations for Shopify stores” means everything
  • Consistent NAP everywhere — your name, address, and phone number should be identical across your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, industry directories. Inconsistency confuses AI models
  • Create FAQ content — AI models disproportionately pull from FAQ sections. Answer the questions your customers actually ask, in plain language
  • Build real authority signals — get mentioned in industry publications, earn reviews on relevant platforms, maintain active social profiles. AI models weight authority heavily
  • Keep your content fresh — AI models with web access check dates. A blog that hasn’t been updated in 18 months signals abandonment

The Honest Truth

GEO is early. Nobody has it completely figured out — not the agencies claiming they do, not the consultants selling frameworks, and not me. The field is literally months old. AI search behavior changes with every model update.

But here’s what I know: the businesses that start paying attention now will be the ones AI recommends by default in 12 months. The ones that wait will spend years trying to displace established recommendations.

The audit itself takes a few hours. The fixes take a few weeks. The advantage compounds for years. That’s the math.

If you’re running a business and you don’t know what AI says about you, that’s the first problem to solve. Everything else is optimization.
