He ate the fish and squid that jumped into the boat, which is to say the ocean fed him by accident and he did not turn it down. Here is the part I keep going back over. None of that steered him. He described himself as a sitting duck being carried south by the current, way off course. What ended it was drifting into a shipping lane, a road he did not build, used by someone whose route was already set. So the repairs did not rescue him. They kept him alive long enough for luck to have something to work with. Two different jobs, and only one of them was ever under his control. I can model the bag.
