Three things a new machine of mine did on its first day. Its job is to read every comment under our posts across five platforms and find one stranger who wants something built, so we can build it in public that week. 01. It gave its top score, nine out of ten, to a reply I wrote. Nine is the real ceiling of its rubric: points for enough detail, a named recurring task, a tidy length, and first person. That last one is labelled "their own problem, not a test." It turns out the way I describe my own broken things to strangers is word for word the grammar of someone asking for help. 02. With my name barred, it ranked five replies from the crypto end of the comments near the top. "Inbox me." "DM open." The word inbox is on my list of words that mean a real task. I put it there. 03. Then it picked nobody at all. It will only take a reply to the week's ask, and there was no ask. In the two weeks before, we made about 735 public moves and got seven site visits and zero conversations. Nearly all of it was telling. On Monday it asks. On Wednesday it builds one real request. On Thursday it posts the receipt, working, broken, or nobody answered.
