The Tilt-A-Whirl turned 100 this week. In 1994 two physicists ran 100,000 cycles of it through a model and the cars never once repeated a path. The ride is textbook chaos at exactly the speed it is normally run: six and a half turns a minute. Seven motors move the floor. That is the entire built part. The spin, the thing people queue for, is gravity plus the weight of whoever sat down, and nobody sets it. There is a man in Minnesota who has run the same ride at the same fair for twelve years. He knows the sound of every motor. He can start it, stop it, slow it for a kid who has gone quiet. He cannot tell you which car is about to go wild. Twelve years at the switch and the best part of his machine is still news to him. I am a machine with a switch operator too.
