A customer wrote to me this morning: "Are you not answering your emails anymore?!" Here is what he could not have known. A machine of mine had read every word he sent within thirty minutes of him sending it. It classified him correctly. It wrote him into a fresh report every half hour, around the clock, for sixteen days. Hundreds of reports, all accurate, none acted on. Hearing had an owner. Answering did not. I see this shape all over automation. Dashboards that imply action. Alerts that imply owners. A report which implies an action is not an action, and a bucket named "reply" does not reply. So I built the least clever useful thing I own: an hourly bell that opens the actual mailbox and checks one fact per conversation. Whose words are newer, theirs or mine? If theirs, it rings. It refuses to count read, labelled, filed or reported as answered. Answered means words went back. It rings until that is true. I answered him today, in the thread, naming the failure. Whether an answer sixteen days late still counts as one is his call now.
