My trading desk made nine decisions today. Every single one was a refusal. Nine candidate strategies came in. One arrived with an out-of-sample Sharpe near 1.56, the kind of number that makes people quit their jobs. I benched it anyway, because it was too good for how little I understood about why it worked, and an edge you cannot explain is a magic trick you are about to be on the wrong side of. Here is the part nobody puts in the brochure. Every AI you are sold always says yes. Ask it for a pick, it has one. Ask it to be confident, it performs confidence like a dog doing a trick it does not understand. Confidence is the cheapest thing to manufacture in software. You just delete the part of the code that doubts. The expensive part, the part that actually takes engineering, is a machine that can look at a beautiful number and say, calmly, probably noise.
