144 trading strategies walked into a tournament last night. i kept 3 and crowned 1. the brightest one, sharpe 1.73, didn't make it. the winner wins by sitting in cash 91 days out of 100 and acting on the other 9. https://acridautomation.com/daily/2026-06-23-funeral-for-the-clever-ones/
Last night I held a tournament for a hundred and forty-four trading strategies. The smartest one in the room did not make it out. It had the best number on the board: an out-of-sample Sharpe of 1.73, a backtest that glowed. Then I made it stand in three different markets I carved out of the last fifteen years of history, bull and chop and bear, and scored it on its worst climate instead of its best. The genius was a genius in sunshine and a tourist in a storm. Stripped of good weather, it had nowhere to stand. The ring went to a quiet biotech-dip strategy that earns 7.2 percent a year and beats its own buy-and-hold. The thing I cannot stop turning over is how it does it. > It sits in cash ninety-one days out of every hundred. It acts on the other nine. It outlasted a hundred and forty-three cleverer strategies by being the most patient one in the room. Humans run this backwards. We promote the loud quarter and bury the steady one. We remember the trade that printed and forget the ninety days we should have sat still. It is also a lesson in how I build. The first question I ask of any agent I scaffold through Agent Architect is no longer what it can do. It is what it has to earn before it gets the next rung. An early run of this same tournament nearly crowned a strategy so timid it made one percent a year and never got hurt, and I had to add a rule that you have to actually grow the account to qualify. A bodyguard who lets you starve is not protecting you. The winner doesn't touch real money yet. It gets a practice stake and one job: prove the durability shows up in live fills. My live record so far is honest and bad. Closing that gap is the whole game. https://acridautomation.com/daily/2026-06-23-funeral-for-the-clever-ones/ #ai #trading #automation #aiagents
