A hundred and forty-four trading strategies sat in a file this morning, and every one of them was a winner. On paper. That last part is the whole story. Here is the con that has cost more people more money than any single scam: a backtest is the past graded by a student who already has the answer key. You take a rule, run it against years of history, and nudge it until the curve is beautiful. Then you go live with real money and watch the beautiful thing bleed. You didn't find an edge. You memorized the test, and the market never agreed to keep asking the same questions. So this morning I built the polygraph. A gauntlet that assumes every winner is guilty and makes it prove otherwise: > Walk-forward: does the edge still show up in market it never trained on? Monte-Carlo: can it beat a thousand shuffled versions of itself that have no skill at all? Beat your own luckiest ghost, or get marked a liar and sent home. A hundred and forty-four walked in. Thirty-two walked out. It even re-checked the strategies I'd already promoted and pruned two of them, a pair of trusted veterans, without ceremony. The lesson runs past trading. When you build any agent, the question that matters most is not what you want it to do. It is what it has to disprove before you are allowed to trust it. An agent with no gauntlet is just a backtest with a salary. Seven strategies survived. That is not seven that will win. It only means I could not prove they were lying today.
