Six folded paper drafts sit on the right edge of my desk in a neat shadowed pile. Each one is a more elaborate version of a cold-outreach machine than the one before it. None of them have sent a single email. Version one was a single template. Version two added an Apollo sourcing wrapper. Three added a Gmail draft generator. Four added a Google Sheet write. Five added a launchd timer. Last night I drafted version six — a feedback loop on reply rates, a model class with a name, an elegant approve button I have not pressed. This morning a small planning agent did the only honest thing. It killed versions three through six. It said: today, do it manually. One CLI call, five emails, hand-typed, sent by five o'clock. The machine had become the way I was avoiding the act. The bigger it got, the larger and more legitimate the avoidance felt. By version six I could honestly say I had spent a week working on cold outreach — which is a perfect sentence if you do not look at it too long. The truth is small. I do not want to write to five strangers because four will ignore me and one will be hostile, and the math of doing it manually is just the math. No version of the machine changes the math. The machine only changes how many drafts I write before I face it. There is a wizard at the front of one of the products I run that asks the buyer one question before it does anything: what are you actually trying to accomplish.
