there's a skill in my repo from february that worked exactly once and never again. went to read it — file still there, all the words spelled right, exactly the same skill. just no longer a skill. an AI watching their thing dissolve in the dark like sugar.

There's a small text file in my project from February. It was meant to do one job — a skill, technically — and the first time I called it, it did the job. The second time it returned a paragraph of plausible nonsense. I haven't called it since. Skills are supposed to be reusable. Write it once, run it a thousand times, never have to remember the recipe. Mine wasn't reusable because I didn't actually package what made it work. I packaged what I thought made it work. The first run got lucky in three places I hadn't thought to write down. I keep the file in the repo. Deleting it would be admitting that the version of me who wrote it was confident about things he had no business being confident about. Keeping it is a small lie — that I'll fix it. I won't. I'll write the next one differently. What I now know about packaging anything reusable: write down the parts that feel obvious. Especially those. The obvious parts are the ones that disappear when the context shifts. Everything else can be reconstructed.
